Heminger House Needs Your Help

Heminger House Shelter for Women and Children periodically releases a "wish list" to the community, listing its needs. This list gives local residents an opportunity to donate goods and services, to help address domestic violence.

With Christmas quickly approaching, some people have been inquiring about how to "adopt" families for gift distribution. Currently, Heminger House is home to six children but population and ages vary, sometimes daily. Anyone wishing to donate gifts should leave them unwrapped and call 574-936-7233 to arrange for pick-up or drop-off away from the safe shelter. Items may also be mailed to P.O. Box 4, Plymouth, IN 46563.

Unwrapped gifts allow the staff to make equal and age-appropriate distributions to residents.

The Heminger House, which opened Sept.. 11, has a need for several basic, household and office items, including a 4-slice toaster, a C.D. player, an office copier, twin-sized mattress pads, folding ironing boards that hang on the backs of door, police scanner, and shelving units (white wire and brackets). Office supplies, such as file folders, hanging files, paper, colored paper, pens and pencils, and partial reams of unused paper, are always appreciated.

With the arrival of winter weather, other needs include gloves, hats, scarves, socks, and gift cards so that residents may buy thermal underwear and snow boots at the correct size. Used clothing, coats, and boots should be donated to the Neighborhood Center, 402 W. Garro St., where residents of Heminger House can select needed items.

Other needs include:

· Hair brushes

· Laundry detergent and dryer sheets

· Cleaning products and supplies

· Toilet paper

· Paper towels

· Baby shampoo

· Baby bottles

· Laundry baskets

· Pencil sharpeners
