Check excessive exploitation of nature: Mar Chrysostum

PATHANAMTHITTA: The senior Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church, Philipose Mar Chrysostum, has stressed the need for a social awareness campaign to check excessive exploitation of nature and natural resources.

Mar Chrysostum was delivering the benedictory speech at a national seminar on the degradation of the Pampa, organised jointly by the Pampa Parirakshana Samiti (PPS) and the Zoology Department of the St. Thomas College, at Kozhencherry on Friday.

Key role

He said the youth had a key role in environment protection. Environmental education and nature conservation should be made part of the academic curriculum, he added.

Prof. Joseph Philip, College Principal, presided. A.P. Thomas of the School of Environmental Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, inaugurated the seminar.

T.N. Ramakrishna Kurup, former Professor of Physics at the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences at Pilani and PPS general secretary N.K. Sukumaran Nair also spoke.

K.N.P. Kurup, K.G. Padmakumar, N. Unnikrishnan, A. Bijukumar, academics, spoke on various bio-diversity issues. Kerala State Pollution Control Board Chief Environmental Engineer K. Sajeevan; Paulus Eapen; Joseph K. John; Purushan Eloor of the Periyar Protection Samiti and Joseph John K. of the Zoology Department were among those who spoke at the seminar.
