Help For Heminger House

I received the following two emails yesterday and a couple of days ago.  Your help is needed as you will see after reading them.

Re: Urgent Plea from Heminger House

I spent the day volunteering at the Heminger House. Very interesting
and rewarding experience. I got a clearer understanding of what they
need.

As far as I can see they have all the pantry type foods that they
need at this time. With the exception of fresh food they probably
have enough food for several months. People have been very
generous. I was talking with the director as far as what they could
really need at this time. They need volunteers to come in and help
with household responsibilities, and to listen to residents as they
discuss ways to re-map their lives.

This is a list of some of the things they need desperately"

Vick's Vapor Rub
Tylenol
Ibuprofen
Children & Infant Tylenol
Cold Medicines
Allergy Medicines
Rid (Lice Medicine)
Feminine Hygiene Products
Toilet Paper
Kleenex

Gift cards for our local grocery stores and Walmart would help out
with purchases that have to be made.

If you can help out with any of these items, please let me know and I
will put you in touch with the right person.

This would be a great cause for any local organization to help out
the Heminger House.

Dear friends,

You may find this hard to believe, or maybe it will not
surprise you, as it does completely validate the need for Heminger
House.

We have been open, for victims of domestic violence, for 21
days. We have 7 bedrooms available for residents. We currently
have 6 mothers and 15 children, however, we've just promised the last
bedroom to a woman with four children, including one who is blind.
Another one of our current children is insulin-dependent.
By tomorrow, we will have 7 mothers and 19 children...

WE ARE FULL!

On the way to school today, one of our mothers and her son
were in a fairly serious car accident. Their car was totalled, and
they both have injuries. The woman who pulled out in front of them
suffered more serious injuries and has been hospitalized.
This is an urgent plea for the following items and services. If you
can help, or put us in touch with someone who can help, it will be
deeply appreciated. I am simply overwhelmed. In order for Heminger
House to be successful, I need help!

We need a bunk bed, with mattresses, TODAY.
We need an additional single bed mattress and box springs TODAY.
We need gift cards to Martin's and Wal-Mart because the babies are
constantly in need of items, including diapers, Desatin, Pedialyte
(more than $5 per bottle!).

We need volunteers to come in and help with household
responsibilities, and to listen to residents as they discuss ways to
re-map their lives.

We need an empty house where one mother can move her four children
immediately. She is in hiding and is scared to death. Her dream is
simple: She wants to live in a place long enough that her children
can play soccer. Does anyone know of an empty house in which the
owner would agree to Section 8 housing, where the state pays you
instead of the tenant? (It's not difficult, as long as it's not a
mobile home).

We need hamburger, in about 5 pound increments, and fresh fruit, like
apples, oranges, bananas and pears.

We need a regular volunteer who can work in the office with me, help
me call butchers, arrange transportation to schools, act as a
babysitter and body guard at the same time, arrange appointments with
counselors, arrange resident's calendars and programming.

If you are willing and available to help, please call me, 574-936-
7233 or email me.

On behalf of victims of domestic violence, thank you.

I had a couple of emails from members asking what the Heminger House
is. It is a home where abused women and children can take shelter
when they leave an abusive relationship and have no where to go.
Some of these women come here with nothing but the clothes on their
back and their children.
